Ann Marie is a single mom raising a family of four children. When she became pregnant with her second child, she was working fulltime as a hairstylist, had a teenage daughter, and was struggling to make ends meet. “It was already difficult to provide for my teenage daughter. I was completely overwhelmed by being pregnant.”
Public Health Solutions’ Queens Neighborhoods Street Mapping Project delves into the findings of a 2014 mapping study of Jackson Heights, Corona, and Jamaica neighborhoods in Queens. The data revealed a number of health risks and health intervention opportunities in those neighborhoods at that time.

He eventually lost his social security benefits, and could not afford basics that he and his wife needed, like food. “Everything was bad, my financial situation was very difficult. I needed help.”

A new report that was released today by Columbia Law School Public Rights/Private Conscience Project (PRPCP) in partnership with Public Health Solutions reveals that in many states, women of color are far more likely than white women to give birth at Catholic hospitals, putting them at greater risk of having their health needs determined by the religious beliefs of bishops rather than the medical judgment of doctors.
Women of color are more likely to access Catholic hospitals, which prohibit doctors from providing contraceptives, sterilization, some treatments for ectopic pregnancy, abortion, and fertility services regardless of their patients’ wishes.
This year is expected to be a banner year for the smoke-free movement. Much of that is a result of the significant policy changes and incredible tobacco-control strides we made last year. Our 2017 “Year-in-Review” shows how far we’ve come since the NYC Smoke-Free Air Act of 2002.
